A school drone activity that is not commercial sits in the GCAA's individual and recreational category, where the binding constraint is location rather than paperwork. Every drone has to be registered with the GCAA before it flies, whatever it weighs. Drones of 5 kg or less may only be flown inside the approved green zone shown in the my drone hub app. Anything heavier than 5 kg, or running a gas engine, may only be flown inside a GCAA-approved flying club, which in practice means a school programme above that weight needs a club rather than a school field.

A school that wants to run drone work as an organisation, rather than as individual recreational flying by staff and students, goes through the operator route instead. That means GCAA security clearance, a UA Operator Registration Letter on the school's letterhead, and a subscription to the GCAA E-Publications service.

Can a student fly a drone at school in the UAE?

Non-commercial school flying falls in the GCAA's individual and recreational category. The drone must be registered with the GCAA regardless of its weight, and if it weighs 5 kg or less it may only be flown in the approved green zone shown in the my drone hub app.

Where can a school drone actually be flown?

Drones of 5 kg or less are limited to the approved flying zones. Anything above 5 kg, or with a gas engine, may only be operated inside a GCAA-approved flying club. Flights must stay within line of sight, no higher than 400 feet above ground level, in daylight and good weather, and at least 5 km away from airport outer fences, heliports, helicopter landing sites, airfields and controlled zones.

Is there an age rule?

The GCAA states the minimum age to fly drones weighing more than 25 kg is 21 years. Age requirements for the pilot licence itself are set by the GCAA and should be confirmed with them directly.

Can students use the drone camera?

Camera use is only allowed inside the flying zones, and UAE laws on filming still apply.
