Getting access
How do I get an account?
Nebli Marine is invitation-only: someone in your organisation invites you by email with a role. To ask for access for a new organisation, use the form at nebli.ai/marine. See People and access.
Is there a password?
No. You sign in with an eight-character code sent to your email. It works once, for ten minutes, in the browser that asked for it. See People and access.
What can each role do?
A lector reads the whole record and takes exports. An operador also runs campaigns and launches, adopts nodes and marks drifters recovered, lost or retired. An administrador also manages people, settings and gateway credentials. See People and access.
Can I use it in Spanish?
Yes. Every screen and email is in English and Spanish. It starts in your browser's language and you can change it from your menu.
Setting up
Do I have to register my drifters before the campaign?
No. A drifter appears in Fleet as an unclaimed node the first time it reports through one of your gateways, with its readings kept from that first one. An operador or administrador then gives it a label and adopts it. See Getting started.
What computer does the gateway need?
Linux or macOS, Intel or ARM, connected to the gateway radio by USB, with outbound access to mqtt.marine.nebli.ai on port 8883. There is no Windows version. See Running the gateway.
How do I know the gateway download is genuine?
Each version comes with a signed list of checksums and the release's public key. Check the key's fingerprint, the signature and your archive before running anything. See Running the gateway.
In the field
What happens if the vessel loses its internet connection?
Nothing is lost. The gateway keeps every reading it receives and sends them when the connection returns, with nothing for you to do. See Running the gateway.
What happens when a drifter goes out of radio range?
It keeps its last 24 hours of reports. When it is back in range and the gateway stays within reach long enough, the gateway collects that backlog, so up to a day out of range loses nothing. The backlog does not survive a restart or a flat battery. See Drifters in the field.
What do reporting, stale and silent mean?
A drifter is reporting while readings arrive, stale after three reporting intervals with nothing (a minute and a half at the default of one report every thirty seconds), and silent after a day. See Fleet and data stream.
A drifter is silent. Where is it?
The map shows an estimated position as a ghost marker, from its last fix, speed and heading. The estimate is never a reading, never part of the track and never exported. See Map and drifter page.
A drifter I marked lost started reporting again. Is it back?
A person's mark wins over the readings: it stays lost, and its readings are kept, until someone adopts it into a campaign again. See Drifters in the field.
The data
Is my data ever changed or filled in?
No. A reading is never edited, a gap stays a gap on the map, the charts and the exports, and a suspect reading is kept with its reason instead of being dropped. See The record and methods.
How do I get all of my data out?
Exports gives a whole campaign, a launch, a drifter or any period as CSV and GeoJSON, with the audit as its own file, at no fee. Every role can export. See Exports.
How is a value like sea state or mat presence calculated?
The Methods page explains how every value is collected and calculated, with its formula, inputs, source and version. Open it from your menu or from the how is this calculated? link beside the value. See The record and methods.
Can someone send false readings into my campaign?
Readings over the radio mesh are not signed, so a radio within range of a gateway could send readings into that campaign, and Nebli Marine cannot tell them from a drifter's own. Every such reading carries the source mesh. State this limit when you present results from mesh readings. See Security and privacy.
Security and privacy
Where does Nebli Marine run?
In Nebli's own AWS account in one US region, in its own namespace with its own database and message stream. See Security and privacy.
Is it certified (SOC 2, ISO 27001)?
No. Nebli Marine has not been audited or certified against a security framework. See Security and privacy.
What does Nebli record about how we use it?
Product analytics and a replay of signed-in sessions, never on the sign-in, invitation or flash pages, and never a gateway credential's secret. See Security and privacy.
