Who this is for: the field scientist or programme lead setting up a first campaign.
What you need before you start:
- An invitation to your organisation in Nebli Marine. Access is by invitation; to request one, use the form at nebli.ai/marine.
- Your drifters and a gateway radio.
- A computer on the vessel or mast, connected to the gateway radio by USB and to the internet.
- The right role. Creating a coastline and issuing a credential need an administrador; starting a campaign and adopting drifters need an operador or an administrador; anyone in the organisation can watch. The three roles keep their Spanish names in the product in both languages: administrador, operador and lector. Roles are explained in People and access.
1. Sign in
Go to marine.nebli.ai and enter the email address you were invited with. Nebli Marine emails you an eight-character code, shown as XXXX-XXXX. Type it in; case does not matter. The code works once, for ten minutes, in the browser that asked for it. A mistyped code does not cost you a new email; after the fifth wrong try, ask for a new one.
Nebli Marine starts in your browser's language, English or Spanish. You can change it at any time from your menu or from Settings.
2. Set up a coastline and a campaign
A coastline is the stretch of shore you measure. An administrador creates one in Settings: give it a name, a time zone, and draw its area on the map. Drawing the area needs a computer; it cannot be done on a phone. Every time on screen is shown in the coastline's time zone.
A campaign is one piece of field work on that coastline. An operador or an administrador starts one from Campaigns. It starts now unless you give another time, and it runs until someone ends it.
3. Issue a gateway credential
The gateway needs a credential to send readings into your campaign. An administrador issues one in Settings for a running campaign.
The secret is shown once, when you create it, and never again. Copy it before you close the window. If a laptop is lost, revoke its credential in Settings and its gateway is cut off within a minute.
4. Start the gateway
Set up the gateway on the vessel's or mast's computer with the credential from step 3. Running the gateway covers the download and setup.
Once it is running, the gateway keeps every reading it receives. If the vessel loses its internet connection, the gateway holds the readings and sends them when the link returns, with nothing for you to do.
5. Power on your drifters and adopt them
Switch the drifters on near the gateway. There is nothing to register in advance: each drifter appears in Fleet as an unclaimed node the moment its first reading arrives, and its readings are kept from that first one.
An operador or an administrador gives each drifter a label and adopts it into the campaign from Fleet. Ten drifters switched on together show up as ten unclaimed nodes, ready to label.
6. Watch the readings arrive
Open Data stream on your phone. Readings appear newest first, each with the drifter, the value, the time the drifter recorded it and the time it reached Nebli Marine. This is the screen to watch on deck to know the fleet is still reporting.
Open Map to see each drifter's track grow over time.
