Map and drifter page

Read where your drifters went, replay a campaign, and look at one drifter in detail.

Who this is for: the analyst turning a campaign into findings, and anyone checking on the fleet.

Before you start: you are signed in and your campaign has drifters reporting (Drifters in the field). Anyone in the organisation can use the map and the drifter pages.

The map

Map shows every drifter on your coastline with its track over the time range you choose, and the gateways and repeaters at their positions. Times are shown in the coastline's time zone.

Range sets how much of the record you see: the last 10 minutes, hour, 6 hours, 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, This launch, This campaign, or From – to for any two moments.

Reading the tracks

  • A break in a track is a silence. A track never bridges a stretch with no readings.
  • Where a drifter was inside a mat, the track is drawn in the mat colour.
  • A dashed track or a hollow marker is a weak position fix. A weak fix is never drawn as a strong one.
  • A dim marker is a drifter that is stale or silent.
  • The ring around a drifter shows how long it has before it counts as stale.
  • The comet tail behind a drifter shows its last few positions, and the arrow shows its heading from the last two.

While a drifter is silent, the map shows where it probably is now as a ghost marker, labelled estimated. The estimate is computed from its last position fix, its speed and its heading. It is never a reading, never part of the track, and never exported: the track and the record keep the gap.

Legend on the map explains each of these. Basemap switches what is under the drifters: Dark, Light, Mid-tone or Satellite.

Over a long range with many positions, the map simplifies the track and says how many positions it is showing. Narrow the range to see every one.

Replaying a campaign

The time scrubber under the map replays the record. Play and Pause it, Step back and Step forward, and change its Speed. While you replay, the map shows the fleet as of the moment under the cursor, and the bar under it shows how many readings arrived in each stretch of time: an empty stretch is a silence. Back to live returns to the present.

A drifter's page

Click a drifter to open its page. At the top: its label and status and how long it has been that way, its hardware id, its firmware version, and the launch and campaign it belongs to. Range works as on the map.

The page shows:

  • Track: the drifter's positions over the range, broken at silences.
  • Latest readings, with the time they are as of.
  • Each measurement over time on its own chart, in the time the drifter recorded it. Suspect readings are marked with the reason, and gaps are left empty.
  • Mat presence · changes of state: each moment the drifter entered or left a mat, or came out of the water.
  • Suspect readings: each one with why it is suspect.
  • Launches of this drifter: when it was released each time, and whether it was recovered, lost or is still out.
  • Audit of this node: every adoption, mark and label change, with who made it and when.

Export this drifter gives you everything in the range you have set, as CSV and GeoJSON.
